Rebuilding Afghan Medical Libraries One Book at a Time

There is an appalling lack of medical literature in Afghanistan. Part of this is from the coups and wars over the last 30 years. Another major reason is the Taliban tenet of forbidding any illustration of the human body as being vulgar. Texts with anatomic depictions have been confiscated and burned. Lectures in the medical schools have been monitored to make sure no drawings were made. Afghanistan is now trying to close the educational gap by building up its medical libraries at all levels– they need our help!
There are already over 50 institutions participating through Operation Medical Libraries, but none from New York - Let's get this books with borders movement going here too - they need OT and PT texts
The Project: I have volunteered to lead the drive for much needed Occupational and Physical Therapy textbooks, with help from the OT and PT Programs at Columbia University
The Goal: Collect new and gently used OT and PT texts and reference materials, dictionaries, all dated 2005-present. Resources published prior to 2005 are accepted, as long as the information is current and relevant. At this point no paper journals are being accepted.
When & Where:This drive will take place starting October 18th and run through November 15th.
Books can be sent to:
(1) Iris Kimberg, MS PT OTR NYTherapyGuide 105 Hudson Street 11N NYC 10013
(media mail rates from USPS is probably the cheapest way to send the books to me)
(2) For staff, faculty or students at Columbia: Pamela Miller, Fieldwork Coordinator of the OT Dept and Risa Granick, EdD, MPA, Director of the PT Dept. have graciously allowed their offices to be drop off points as well.
