Program Description

"A Compassionate Presence: Reiki as Alternative Pain Management" - on Advances in Long Term Care Medicine, produced in cooperation with AMDA

If you were told there was a method of reducing pain that was low- or no cost, not harmful, and effective, would you be interested in learning more? Nothing can replace evidence-based medicine, but the human connection between physician and patient can go a long way to reducing patients' pain and suffering. How can Reiki and other alternative healing methods complement conventional evidence-based medicine? Dr. Harold Bob, managing partner of a group practice in Reisterstown, Maryland, and medical director at two nursing homes and a hospice in Maryland, discusses the benefits Reiki has brought to his patients and suggests ways all physicians can apply the basic principles of this method in their own practices to connect with patients. How big of a difference can compassionate presence bring to a patient's quality of life and well being? Hosted by Dr. Eric Tangalos.

Dr. Eric G. Tangalos is professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and was chair of primary care internal medicine from 1997 to 2006. He is a past-president of the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) and is a fellow and past governor of the American College of Physicians. He served eight years on the national board of the Alzheimer's Association and has had continuous NIH funding for his work at the Mayo Alzheimer's Disease Center since 1986. Dr. Tangalos has been medical director at Bethany Samaritan Heights nursing home since its doors opened in 1981. He is also vice chair of the AMDA Policy Committee is again delegate to the AMA for AMDA.

Dr. Harold Bob is the regional Medical Director for Five Star physician services, a nursing facility management company, and for Seasons Hospice of Maryland. He received his MD from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and went on to complete his internship and residency at Wilmington Medical Center in Delaware. In addition, Dr. Bob often integrates traditional and complementary medicine, and has trained as a Reiki Master in both Western and Japanese Reiki.

How can a clinician support or recommend a treatment with no scientific plausibility and no peer reviewed literature to show that it is better than other treatments or placebo? It seems unethical for a professional to advocate the use of unproven treatments especially when there is no plausible rational for its use. Patient's could use their time and money in much better ways!
